Vietnam Veteran Appreciation Event – Toledo, OH

Last week “they” held a Vietnam Veteran Appreciation Event here in Northwest Ohio.  The feature of the event was the 80% scale ‘traveling wall.’  One of those on the Wall is Tom Widerquist.

Tom was a member of our pilot training class, Class 71-07 at Randolph AFB, TX.  We graduated in April 1971 and Tom was killed on 3 May 1972 at An Loc, South Vietnam.

It seems like only yesterday that Tom moved in to the apartment next to me at the Randolph BOQ. He was the consumate gentleman and a good friend. It warms my heart that you were able to honor him.
    Thanks Bob

Of course, I didn’t know Tom, but I look at the picture and wonder if we were really that young. There is a picture of me around here somewhere in one of those cotton flight suits and with a little hair.

I went to the wall once many years ago and I couldn’t really get close to it. I don’t really know why. Some years later I read a book titled Fooled by Randomness The Hidden Role of Chance in the Markets and in Life by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. I guess I’m not so fooled by randomness anymore. It’s a good book.
