This is the pool at the Ramey AFB Officer’s Club:
I wouldn’t have a clue who any of those folks are, but I sure recognize the pool, the eating area and the bar! For the better part of 3 years, from ~ 1957 – 1960, I was in that pool almost every day. Went off that very high dive, many times. And, sometimes, I didn’t bust my ass! Gawd, the FUN we had in those days…
I think the neatest thing about this pool was, we could go there just about any time we wanted to. We didn’t have to schedule “play dates!” We didn’t need Mommy or Daddy! Of course, growing up on bases we didn’t have to contend with a segment of our society that thinks sexual predators have rights also! It was safe for a kid to grow up on Ramey AFB in those days…
Jeez, I swam there almost every day from 1961-1964! Used to go to swimming practice at like 5 in the morning by myself. Yes we’d wander the base completely unattended. Go to the beach. Where ever we wished.
That pool is where I learned to swim in 1959. Wow. This brings back memories. Like you guys I recall wandering freely on the base as well. I also remember keeping our horses over at the Lazy R riding club and collecting golf balls in our backyard to give to a friend of my father who took me up in a Piper from the base aero club.
Walk,
Are youa ware of the Ramey Reunion in June 2015? Bob
I met Curtis Lemay just about exactly where those people are sitting when I was little kid in the early 60’s. He was sitting in a chair there sunning himself. I was on the swim team. Introduced myself. Thought I was pretty brave.
