The Blue Car…

In late summer 1967, a 7-year old boy saw ‘the blue car’ come to his house.  He then watched a couple-3 officers, dressed in their dressed blues, come up to his house.  It was then he and his family learned that his father had been shot down in Vietnam and was listed as ‘Missing In Action.”  It was then he became “the man of the house.”

For the next 2 years his family did not know if his Dad was dead or alive.  And this 7-year old picked up the responsibilities of “the man of the house.”  Then they learned that his father was in fact, alive and a POW.  And for the subsequent 3 1/2 years, this 7-year old was ‘the man of the house.’

His story is unique in and of itself; but not so different than many other children of military service members – “Military Brats,” as we often call ourselves.  This kid ‘stepped up’ when called upon.  It’s just what we do…

H.R. 1889 is a bill currently before Congress to recognize such kids as this.  (I have included the text of this bill in the post just previous to this one.)  It is a simple bill, 6 pages in length.  In a ‘nutshell,’ the bill says:

1.  We (the Congress, and America) want to recognize the children of military service members (Military Brats) for their service to our nation through their sacrifices, their commitment and their service to our nation.

2.  The method of recognition will be a commemorative lapel pin (button), to be designed and approved by the Secretary of Defense.

3.  Eligibility and presentation are also covered.

4.  Cost will be a “pass through” cost – more than likely, to the parents.

And this is it.  Simple, huh?  And yet this bill has sat “in committee” for over 3 years, with no action!

And now I will make it even more simple: the design of the pin should be a dandelion flower.

Screen Shot 2013-06-12 at 7.24.11 AMLike the dandelion, when we (Military Brats) mature, we scatter to the four winds, then take root and blossom again.  Simple, huh?

So, why has this simple bill sat “in committee” for over 3 years?

Fishing Licenses?

Overheard on a walk at Oak Openings the other day, from a 25-26 year old woman:  “Daddy, would I need to take a test to get a fishing license?”

Why is it just me who seems to hear this crap?  And, these people breed, and they vote….

Military Brats on WSPD

I was afforded the opportunity to speak about Military Brats on WSPD (1370 AM) here in Toledo, OH yesterday with Fred Lefebvre.

[audio: https://www.lonelypilotbob.com/bratcoins.mp3]

The podcast runs about 12 minutes, and promotes HR 1889; House Resolution 1889: Children of Military Service Members Commemorative Lapel Pin Act.

I am truly grateful to Fred, and all the folks at WSPD for their support… we just might get this done!

The Vietnam Veteran ‘Military Brat’ Challenge Coins

In conjunction with the Vietnam Veteran Appreciation Event here in Toledo, OH last week (4-9 Jun 2013) I was afforded the opportunity to hand out Vietnam Veteran Military Brat Challenge Coins.

VVC

The idea evolved from an initiative of mine to get the Congress to authorize a Commemorative Congressional Lapel Pin for ‘Military Brats.’  Our thought was to create awareness for the contributions and sacrifices of Military Brats to our country.  They ‘serve’ also…  There is currently legislation before Congress, HR 1889, Children of Military Service Members Commemorative Lapel Pin Act to create such a pin for our kids.  (They call us ‘the children of military service members’ because they are uncomfortable with the term, ‘brat.’  Well, okay!)

Mr. Duke Wheeler, a neighbor and friend, has supported me with my idea ever since I first presented it to him; and for that, I am very grateful.  He was the “driver” behind the Wall coming to Toledo for the Vietnam Veteran Appreciation Event (hitherto, and from within, forever known now to man throughout the ages as, “The Event.”)  As things began to come together Duke approached me and asked if I would like to hand out Vietnam Vet/Military Brat challenge coins at the Event.  Well, sure I would… “Do we have any?” I wondered.

It took about a week or so to come up with a design.  The back of the coin was easy: Vietnam – a handful of bamboo and a dragon would work fine.  The front was a bit trickier.

We wanted to use a ‘likeness’ of the Vietnam War Memorial.  To do this we needed ‘permission.’  Duke took care of that.  Then I felt I wanted the Air Force represented.  So, we added a ‘jet’ on the coin, for “top cover.”  I am thrilled with what we came up with!

Coins2

Me, and my friend, Duke…

Coin

The coins held briefly in our hands, now in the hands of Vietnam Vets “Military Brats…”

I am not sure (yet) how many coins we handed out, but I can tell you, they were very well received…

Vietnam Veteran Appreciation Event – Toledo, OH

Last week “they” held a Vietnam Veteran Appreciation Event here in Northwest Ohio.  The feature of the event was the 80% scale ‘traveling wall.’  One of those on the Wall is Tom Widerquist.

Screen Shot 2013-06-07 at 7.26.59 PM

Tom was a member of our pilot training class, Class 71-07 at Randolph AFB, TX.  We graduated in April 1971 and Tom was killed on 3 May 1972 at An Loc, South Vietnam.

Roundup, and My Observation Hive…

This is a picture of my Observation Hive, right after I added the bees:

IMG_0967Take note of the number of bees.

And now, this picture was taken this morning:

Bees2day

Not so many, huh?  I don’t think it was anything I said… I think it was the ‘Roundup,’ manufactured by Monsanto, I used.

Now, ‘Dear Leader’s’ people at the EPA will tell you it ain’t so.  They had Roundup tested, in a Lab, and it was not found to be harmful to bees.  If you dig a little deeper however, you will discover the Lab they used was Monsanto’s!  The “fuck,” you say?!

By contrast, here are two pictures of another Observation Hive I installed at the very same time I installed mine.  The bees are actually all related!

IMG_0959BeesLial

Again, note the number of bees…

Then, look at this picture from the other day!  The difference?  No Roundup over at the school…

I just don’t “buy into” the EPA’s claim that Roundup, by Monsanto, is harmless.  But, I suppose, like a “good little ‘gomer,’ I should just shut up and row.  This all being said, this evening when they all return to the hive, those that survive the day, will receive a stern briefing from me to watch what they eat!  Harry might have had the right idea after all – about briefing the bees….

Betrayal in Benghazi

(I have received this ’email’ 3 or 4 times now, and it still pisses me off!  We have a chicken-shit as our commander in chief.  There are just no other words to describe him.  To put all this in perspective I am including a link to the Wikipedia description of the 1972 rescue of Capt. Roger Locher in North Vietnam.)

I would say every US fighter pilot, retired or on active duty, knows that Panetta and Dempsey both are full of crap when they said there was no time to send help to Benghazi . They claim it was a problem of “time/space.”  All my friends and I said, “Bullshit.”  We know they could have gotten F-16s there from Aviano.  “Hands” Handley is a well-respected USAF fighter pilot.  Here is his short resume and what he just wrote about Benghazi below that.  If anything, Handley is pessimistic in his timeline of when F-16s could have reached Benghazi.  I think they could have been airborne even sooner and turned quicker at Sig.

The decision to not try was not based on capability.  We had the operational capability in every way.

I hope Handley’s taxes are in order.  His IRS audit is forthcoming.

Eagle Biography
Colonel Phil “Hands” Handley

Colonel Phil “Hands” Handley is credited with the highest speed air-to-air gun kill in the history of aerial combat.  He flew operationally for all but 11 months of a 26-year career, in aircraft such as the F-86 Sabre, F-15 Eagle, and the C-130A Hercules.  Additionally, he flew 275 combat missions during two tours in Southeast Asia in the F-4D and F-4E.  His awards include 21 Air Medals, 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Silver Star.

Betrayal in Benghazi
Phil “Hands” Handley
Colonel, USAF (Ret.)

The combat code of the US Military is that we don’t abandon our dead or wounded on the battlefield.  In US Air Force lingo, fighter pilots don’t run off and leave their wingmen.  If one of our own is shot down, still alive and not yet in enemy captivity, we will either come to get him or die trying.  Among America ’s fighting forces, the calm, sure knowledge that such an irrevocable bond exists is priceless.  Along with individual faith and personal grit, it is a sacred trust that has often sustained hope in the face of terribly long odds.

The disgraceful abandonment of our Ambassador and those brave ex-SEALs who fought to their deaths to save others in that compound is nothing short of dereliction-of-duty. Additionally, the patently absurd cover-up scenario that was fabricated in the aftermath was an outright lie in an attempt to shield the President and the Secretary of State from responsibility.

It has been over eight months since the attack on our compound in Benghazi.  The White House strategy, with the aid of a “lap dog press” has been to run out the clock before the truth is forthcoming.  The recent testimonies of the three “whistle blowers” have reopened the subject and hopefully will lead to exposure and disgrace of those responsible for this embarrassing debacle.

It would appear that the most recent firewall which the Administration is counting on is the contention that there were simply no military assets that could be brought to bear in time to make a difference… mainly due to the unavailability of tanker support for fighter aircraft.  This is simply BS, regardless how many supposed “experts” the Administration trot out to make such an assertion.  The bottom line is that even if the closest asset capable of response was half-way around the world, you don’t just sit on your penguin ass and do nothing.  The fact is that the closest asset was not half-way around the world, but as near as Aviano Air Base, Italy where two squadrons of F-16Cs are based.  Consider the following scenario (all times Benghazi local):

When Hicks in Tripoli receives a call at 9:40 PM from Ambassador Stevens informing him “Greg, we are under attack!” (his last words), he immediately notifies all agencies and prepares for the immediate initiation of an existing “Emergency Response Plan.”  At AFRICON, General Carter Ham attempts to mount a rescue effort, but is told to “stand down.”  By 10:30 PM an unarmed drone is overhead the compound and streaming live feed to various Command and Control Agencies… and everyone watching that feed knew damn well what was going on.  At 11:30 PM Woods, Doherty and five others leave Tripoli, arriving in Benghazi at 1:30 AM on Wednesday morning, where they hold off the attacking mob from the roof of the compound until they are killed by a mortar direct hit at 4:00 AM.

So nothing could have been done, eh?  Nonsense.  If one assumes that tanker support really was not available… what about this:

· When at 10:00 PM AFRICON alerts the 31st TFW Command Post in Aviano Air Base, Italy of the attack, the Wing Commander orders preparation for the launch of two F-16s and advises the Command Post at NAS Sigonella to prepare for hot pit refueling and quick turn of the jets.

· By 11:30 PM, two F-16Cs with drop tanks and each armed with five hundred 20 MM rounds are airborne.  Flying at 0.92 mach they will cover the 522 nautical miles directly to NAS Sigonella in 1.08 hours.

· While in-route, the flight lead is informed of the tactical situation, rules of engagement, and radio frequencies to use.

· The jets depart Sigonella at 1:10 AM with full fuel load and cover the 377 nautical miles directly to Benghazi in 0.8 hours, arriving at 1:50 AM… which would be 20 minutes after the arrival of Woods, Doherty and their team.

· Providing that the two F-16s initial pass over the mob, in full afterburner at 200 feet and 550 knots did not stop the attack in its tracks, only a few well placed strafing runs on targets of opportunity would assuredly do the trick.

· Were the F-16s fuel state insufficient to recover at Sigonelli after jettisoning their external drop tanks, they could easily do so at Tripoli International Airport , only one-half hour away.

· As for those hand-wringing naysayers who would worry about IFR clearances, border crossing authority, collateral damage, landing rights, political correctness and dozens of other reasons not to act… screw them.  It is high time that our “leadership” get their priorities straight and put America ’s interests first.  (Amen!)

The end result would be that Woods and Doherty would be alive.  Dozens in the attacking rabble would be rendezvousing with “72 virgins”… and a clear message would have been sent to the next worthless POS (piece of shit) terrorist contemplating an attack on Americans that it is not really a good idea to “tug on Superman’s cape.”

Of course all this would depend upon a Commander In Chief that was more concerned with saving the lives of those he put in harm’s way than getting his crew rest for a campaign fund raising event in Las Vegas the next day.  As well as a Secretary of State that actually understood “What difference did it make?”, or a Secretary of Defense whose immediate response was not to the effect that, “One of the military tenants is that you don’t commit assets until you fully understand the tactical situation.”  Was he not watching a live feed from the unarmed drone… and he didn’t understand the tactical situation?

Ultimately it comes down to the question of who give that order to “stand down?” Whoever that coward turns out to be should be exposed, removed from office, and face criminal charges for dereliction of duty.  The combat forces of the Untied States of America deserve leadership that really does “have their back” when the chips are down.

And now the account of Roger Locher’s rescue:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Locher

Insight into Islam – 1

I was first oriented to Islam in 1977 when I was a T-38 IP at Vance AFB, OK.  We had a contingent of Iranian students coming to Vance for pilot training and the State Department sent a representative to give us a briefing on their customs and beliefs.  It was one of those briefings I really didn’t want to attend but was ”mandatory’ in order to fly with these folks.  It also turned out to be one of the most informative briefings I had whilst on active duty.

One of my “takeaways” was that certain behaviors of Islam didn’t apply when Muslims were in countries not under Islamic rule or law.  Drinking – specifically prohibited, but heavily engaged in at Vance by the Iranians.  Smoking – the same.  Dating ‘infidels’ – the same.  And so forth…

Another interesting facet I discovered is, in Islam it is not considered a “lie” if the lie is not discovered, or challenged.  And it is considered “impolite” to challenge someone about a lie.  Well, okay.

I addressed this right off the bat with one of my first Iranian students.  As we approached “the perch,” the point where we were to begin the final turn, he asked me what our final turn airspeed was.  I intentionally gave him a speed 10 knots below our calculated airspeed, knowing it would generate a horrendous sink rate.  And true to form, we were soon dropping like a rock in the final turn.

“Rolling out on final, go around,” called out the controller, “use Burners!”

I was about to direct the go-around myself when the call came in.  Lt. Bosh then executed a go-around, arresting our sink rate.  As we accelerated down the runway he exclaimed, “Sir, I am not thinking the airspeed was correct.”

“Oh,” I replied, “you caught me. I just want to make a point here Lt. Bosh.”

“And what is that, Sir?” he asked.

“Well,” I said, “I understand that ‘lying’ in your culture is not a ‘big deal’ – if you are not caught.  So I want to make a point here: if I think you are lying to me, I will lie to you.  And my lies will kill you.”

“Sir, may I speak freely?” he asked.

“Sure,” I replied.

“I think you are crazy!”

I may have been (or may be), but I don’t think any of the Iranians ever lied to me.  Lt. Bosh was their senior ranking officer, and the ‘word’ soon got out.

This was just one experience I encountered with their customs.  In later years this was reinforced with the Saudi and Kuwaiti students I flew with.  Not a “big deal” once you understand them.

I don’t “have it in” for Muslims; but I also don’t accept everything “they” say at face value.  I also don’t think I am obligated to “respect” Islam just for being Islam.  “Respect” is earned, not something mandated.

The biggest problem I have with Islam in the United States today is, certain groups (CAIR) and individuals are promoting Islam as something I don’t think it is – a “religion” of peace.  And “mandating” that I accept it for what they are telling me it is.  Nah, that isn’t going to work with me…

I watch the European experience with Islam, and see where it’s going, and I am not convinced.  Time will tell, but I think we are experiencing an “invasion;” from within.  Oh well…

One final note here:  It was later reported that most, if not all of the Iranians we trained, were killed when the Shah fell to the Ayatollah.  Must be a part of the “peaceful religion” I don’t get as an Infidel…

The Coins Are Here!

On Saturday Duke brought by a couple coins we designed and are going to hand out at the Toledo, Ohio Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Event, 5-9 Jun 2013.

I have known Duke – Duke Wheeler – for 10 years or so now.  He owns and operates ‘The Whitehouse Christmas Tree Farm’ just up the street.  He also operates the Butterfly House, a fresh-water shrimp farm and a corn maze.  Quite a busy, and remarkable man!  And through it all, he has never lost sight of the military.  On numerous occasions he has sponsored “appreciation events” for our local troops.  From bar-b-ques to Christmas trees.   His latest endeavor is the “Toledo (Ohio) Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Event,” http://www.toledoveteransevent.com/.   And here is where he invited me to play.

I have been trying to get Congress to recognize the sacrifices, contributions and commitment of Military Brats to our nation since December 2009.  My U.S. Representative, Bob Latta, R/OH has graciously introduced 3 pieces of legislation (HR 5333 (Mar. 2010), HR 1014 (Mar. 2011) and Hr 1889 (May 2013),  proposing that Congress authorize a Congressional Lapel pin for ‘the Children of Military Service Members.’  (They are afraid of the term ‘Military Brats!’  Okay, what-ever…)  Duke has also been very supportive of this initiative throughout the past 4 years.  So, I wasn’t too surprised when he asked me if I wanted to participate in this event…

He suggested we create a “challenge coin” specifically for the Military Brats of Vietnam Era Vets to hand out at the Event.  What a great idea!  So, using his initial suggestion of using the Vietnam Memorial depiction of 3 soldiers for the front of the coin,

facts-about-vietnam-war-memorialI suggested we add a ‘jet’ for ‘top cover.’  (It always annoyed me that airmen were left out of this scene.)  With the reverse side of the coin fairly straightforward, this is what we came up with:

Bratcoin                                                               How cool is this?

Duke had 3,000 of these coins struck, and we will begun handing them out on Wednesday night.

It is my hope that somehow this coin gains national attention, and brings attention to our bill before Congress for a Congressional Lapel Pin for Military Brats.  Duke told me that if I get hauled off to jail for using the likeness of the Vietnam Memorial without permission, that ought to do it – give us the publicity we need.  If that’s what it takes, come get my ass!

When Duke came over last Saturday with my coins, he shared a story I think says it all.  He told me of stopping for gas on the way over and seeing a guy walking with a cane.  He asked the man if he was a Vet.

“Yes,” the guy told Duke, “from Vietnam.  The ‘Triple Nickel’ Squadron.'”

Duke then reached into his truck and gave him a commemorative Vietnam Veteran’s hat.  He then asked the man if he had any kids and was told that he had 3.  Duke then told him he had something else for him, and handed him 3 of our coins.

The man had tears in his eyes as he accepted the coins.  We know what these coins will mean to our kids!  We know what a Congressional Lapel Pin will mean to our kids….
