Vetting Air Force Officers

I can only speak to the ‘vetting’ of Air Force officers from the the period I was on active duty, 1968 – 1988.

From the moment I entered active duty I was continually being vetted for command.  That’s they very nature of the “up, or out” system we operated under at the time.  This meant that an officer either demonstrated upward mobility, or he/she was released from service.

We were ‘graded’ primarily through the formal OER (Officer Evaluation Report) system.  Initially we were rated semi-annually, then annually after two years.  Specific rating factors included knowledge of duties, performance of duties, effectiveness in working with others, leadership characteristics, judgement, use of resources, writing ability and oral expression and military qualities.  Over the years these measures were continually “tweaked” to include ‘equal opportunity participation, and later human relations.  The point being, we were always being ‘looked at.’

That was on the ‘formal’ side.  Then there was the ‘informal side.’  Career enhancement at the bar, on the golf course, in staff rooms and so forth.  For better or worse, I chose to focus on ‘performance’ and the bar.  My golf game sucks and I fail miserably at kissing-ass, even today!

I began my ‘rise’ in January 1975 when I reported to Vance AFB, OK as a T-38A IP.  The OER system was revised in 1975 and became much tougher.  At that time the Air Force mandated that only 22% of officers in a certain grade in a aunt could be given the “top grade,” a rating of “1.”  Then 28% were allocated a rating of “2,” and finally the “bottom 50% were given “3’s.”  For that initial reporting period I snagged a “1” having been in the unit only 4 months.  Of course it was subsequently downgraded to a “2” by the squadron commander as more of “his boys” came into play; then to a “3” as the wing commander stacked me up against everyone in the Wing.  However, all things considered, not bad.  From 1976 through 1988, all my ratings were “1’s.”

Air Training Command (ATC) selects it’s squadron commanders from the recommendations of the Hasty Hawk Board – an annual board consisting of ATC Wing Commanders.  In may case, the board met in 1985.  Approximately 300 officer records were reviewed and considered.  From those records, 31 officers made the Hasty Hawk list.  It is at this juncture ‘politics’ begins to come into play.  There is always a bit of “horse trading” that goes on during that 3-day board down at Randolph.  Anyway, I made the list.

Being ‘on the list’ doesn’t necessarily mean an individual will get a squadron – it just means you are on the list.  I was fortunate; I got a squadron in 1986.

My point here is, officers are vetted for command – continually upon receiving their commissions.  In the past 6 years I have seen senior officers (O-5s and above) “smoked” (relieved of command) at an alarming rate.  More often for such things like, “loss of confidence in his ability to command.”

Over the years I witnessed a few folks relieved of command, but no where near the number I am seeing today.  Just didn’t happen.  So, what changed?

I’ll leave this up to you to decide… but I will tell you, officers are vetted front he day they – from the day we – enter active duty.

Have You Thought About…

About 9 or 10 months before I retired from Northwest Airlines I was called to take a flight from Detroit to Ft. Myers, FL.  I was an A-320 Captain at the time, and was sitting ‘Alert;’ essentially “on call.”  I got to the airport around 7 PM or so and we departed about an hour later.

The flight went fine until we were about an hour from landing.  We received notification that the runway lights at Ft. Myers had been cut, and were out.  That meant that we couldn’t land at Ft. Myers.  Well, fine.

We had a bit of fuel for holding, so we requested to hold just to the West of Tampa.  I was always an advocate of letting the passengers know early what was going on, so I told them that we were entering holding to see if the runway lights could be repaired before we would have to divert.

Everything was fine, for about 10 – 15 minutes or so… then the Flight Attendant call bell began ringing:

Ding – “We have a passenger who wants to know if we could divert into Tampa…”

Ding – “We have  passenger who wants to know if you thought about diverting into Sarasota…”

Ding – “The guy in seat 3C wants to know if we could go to Orlando…”

After a couples more ‘dings,’ I had finally had enough!  I trapped the PA and the announcement net something like this:

“Well Folks, I have received several suggestions with respect to divert options.  It is my understanding that the 2 dummies who fly for Northwest took the LA flight tonight.  You folks are fortunate to have 2 pilots who actually completed their respective flying courses.  And one of the classes actually covers ‘divert options.’

The things we have to consider for diverting are: fuel requirements, weather, gate availability, hotel space (if needed), fuel availability and so forth.  In the event we will have to divert, all these factors will come into play.  So, while we really appreciate your suggestions, we are on top of it….”

I then hung up, and we went back to telling war stories!

As it turned out that evening we did divert – to Miami.  And wouldn’t you know it, on taxi in, we were informed that the runway lights at Ft. Myers were back in service!

So, after a “quick turn,” we were airborne once again and finally made it to Ft. Myers about  midnight.

Once we got the airplane ‘put to bed,’ we went out front to catch the hotel van.  At that time of the night, they only had one van running, and a family from our flight took it!  No room for the crew, so we had to wait about another 45 minutes for the van to return – then another 20 minutes to the hotel.

It was always the “glamor” that kept me flying!  That, and the crew meals!  LOL…

New Age Driving Tips – Traffic Lights

For ‘millennials:’  More impediments to your driving, I know… from observation.

The traffic light system used to work pretty well, when folks knew that “Yellow,” or “Amber” used to mean that the light was about o turn Red, and that the default was to stop.  Today it carries an entirely different meaning (if it means anything).

traffic-light

Today when a traffic light turns Yellow it is purely a function of your distance from the light, and your speed.  You may have to “punch it to make it.”  This is if you are within a quarter mile of the light.

More often than not when the light turns Yellow, it’s not a problem.  I typically will stop.  If for nothing else, just to disrupt the day of the guy ‘tailgating’ behind me.  (It’s kinda like stopping at Stop signs.  Often I stop just to piss off the guy behind me – especially if I think he or she might be in a hurry, again indicated by tailgating.  Because it’s the Law is just an added caveat.)

Another reason I will stop, even if I have to “get on it” is, I am kinda curious how those airbags will function when someone craters me from behind.  I wore a parachute for over 13 years, and often wondered how it would have worked…

So, here’s what I have seen:  If you are driving along and the light turns Yellow, keep going – no worries.  If you are the Number 2 or the Number 3 guy, you’re still good.  It get’s tricky being the Number 4 guy.  If you can ‘tuck it in tight’ with Number 3, you’re good.  That’s where your Nascar or Thunderbird experience really comes in handy.  Beyond that, it’s a ‘crap shoot.’

Why this works is because folks have realized that it takes “time” for those slobs stopped at the Red light to process the light turning Green and to accelerate.  They know that most people now are too busy texting, or sexting to notice the light changing.  And Time is now on their side!

These days, when I am stooped at a Red light, even though I may be “switched on,” I give it a “5-count” before proceeding.  This, more often than not, gives me the buffer I need to get through the light without being greased.  On a couple occasions, a 7-count would have been more prudent.

Respecting the Presidency

I have been guilty here of late, of referring to the President of the United States as “Dear Leader.”  It was intended as an expression of total disrespect – a ‘takeoff’ on the Dear Leader of North Korea.  Not necessarily as disrespect for the office of the Presidency, but certainly for the individual now “hanging out” in the White House.  I use the expression of “hanging lout” intentionally because the current individual does not conduct himself in the manner of any President I have had before him.  And this is my point here: “Respect” is earned, not rendered as a function of position – whether it be an NBA basketball player, a military commander or the President.  And usually, as in the case of the President, this ‘respect’ is gained long before assuming the office.

So let’s look at this individual currently ‘hanging out’ in the White House.  Where did he come from?  What did he do before becoming President?  What were his “signature” pieces of legislature?

He is purported to be an American, by birth.   He had an American mother for sure, and who knows about the father?  He grows up being shuffled all over the world.  And in this I do not think he actually has an appreciation of “American values.”  I sure don’t see them…

And what did he actually accomplished before becoming President?  He earned a law degree, but did he actually practice law?  (He reportedly was the Editor of The Harvard Law Review, but where is anything he wrote as the Editor?)  He professes to be a Constitutional scholar, but then continually side-steps the Constitution with Executive Orders.  Has he ever run a business?

With respect to winning elections – I don’t think he has ever won on “merit;” he tends to win by destroying the “character” of his opponents.  The American way?  Maybe now…

“Signature legislation?”  Nope, there isn’t any.  In the Illinois State legislature he voted “Present” more often than anything.  Then as a US Senator he was ‘missing in action’ quite a bit.  (For example, he skipped 19 of 37 VA committee meetings he was assigned to…)

After his election to the Presidency one of the first things that happens is, he is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize – and again, he didn’t do anything of merit!  Then one of his first actions was to head out into the world, apologizing for America, and Americans.  Who does this?  And to claim ‘Americans’ are not exceptional?  As a nation, we are exceptional!  And nobody challenges this guy; because he’s black I suppose.

He then claims Muslims have contributed to the building of America since the beginning.  Oh, bullshit!  Name one Muslim attendee at the Congressional Congress?  A Muslim Founding Father?  How many Muslims charged up San Juan Hill with Teddy and the Rough Riders?  And how many died at Pearl Harbor?  Exactly – none…

Then we take a look at his record as President.  (I know, I know, he had a lot to overcome with Bush…bullshit.)  Our military is weaker (“Sequester:” To divert funds from National Defense to Social Programs.  For handouts, ‘gimmes,’ and entitlements, etc.).  46 million Americans now receiving ‘food stamps.’  Illegal immigrants now coming unchecked through our borders.  And so forth…

I could go on, but I reckon you get the picture.  This guy has not earned  respect, and from my perspective, he certainly does not deserve ‘respect.’  So, if you were offended with my use of “Dear Leader,” I humbly apologize, and will refrain from using the term in the future.  In expressing my thoughts here it came to me, he is certainly NOT a ‘leader’ either!

I will continually hold deep respect for the Office of the Presidency, but I will not render blanket respect for the individual holding the office – until he or she shows that they have earned that respect!

Of note, the Lakota chose their leaders on “merit” and “character,” not “personality” as we sophisticated, educated people tend to do.  If in turn, a chosen leader didn’t ‘measure up,’ he awoke one morning to find the rest of the tribe gone!  Just that simple.  Figuratively speaking, I am packed, with this guy in the White House…

“New Age” Driving Tips – Stop Signs

Yep, these guys:

stop3

A relatively simple and straight forward traffic sign, you would think… Well, they used to be.  Today they are viewed (for the most part) as more of a nuisance or inconvenience more than anything.  Here in our glorious ‘new age’ of driving, you really don’t have to stop, if  there is not a cop around.  Just ‘coast on through,’ especially if you are running late.  And even if you are not running late, everyone else on the road will know the World revolves around you – so just blow on through…

There are a couple things you might want to keep in mind when you coast through a stop sign these days; the “Big Mother Rule” being primary among them.  This is when an approaching vehicle is bigger than the one you are in.  It’s that “Mass times Velocity” thing… Didn’t learn that in high school?  Well, never mind Sunshine, you will… and if you survive, it will then mean something to you.  If you don’t survive, we’ll put up a nice ‘road cross’ for you at the spot you departed our world…

About 10 years ago there was a guy who coasted through a stop sign with an oncoming semi truck coming his way.  It might have worked except there was about 3-4 inches of snow on the roads.  Now you have that ‘mass times velocity’ thing compounded by a slick surface!  The guy’s car couldn’t accelerate as he thought, and the truck couldn’t slow up, as he thought.  Oh well, his choice.  He got a very nice ‘road cross…’

It’s uncanny but I can almost sense when someone is going to blow through a stop sign these days.  I can almost sense them ‘doing the math:’  “Okay, I can pull out in front of this (oncoming) guy because there’s room for me to get out, and time for him to slow up…”

If I am doing 55 mph and they accelerate right up to 55, or higher, before I come up to their bumper, that is pure coincidence.  More often than not, they tend to “lollygag at 45 – 50 mph!”  Or the real “crowd pleaser is when someone pulls out in front of you, sending you into “max breaking,” only to turn left about 100 feet down the road!  But keep in mind, they are probably running late…

Lately I have been noticing more and more “piggy backing” through stop signs.  This is when the first guy blows through a stop sign and a couple-3 others follow, knowing you are going to have to slow up anyway!  No need to get upset – it’s just “new age driving…”

Be at Peace, knowing you are near the Center of the Universe…

Bob, at 68…

I was out working on Evan’s canoe this morning and began reflecting on ‘Bob.’  It seems like I spend a fair amount of time on ‘introspection’ these days…

If anything I would describe ‘Bob’ as ‘one big kid’ today.  A big kid with a big heart, still struggling with ‘unfounded fears.’  But those fears are subsiding.   Ever so slowly, they are subsiding… and I think they call this ‘progress.’

I enjoy laughing.  And I enjoy creating laughter in others.  If I call to order something or another from a ‘1-800’ number and I leave the ‘sales associate’ laughing, then my heart is warm.

I would describe my humor as witty, dry, sophisticated and clever.  I just don’t like to tell jokes – I love ‘inserting’ either myself, or my friends into them, to give them more ‘believability.’  Then I love to watch you as you discover the ‘delight’ in my story!  These jokes then, tend to stay with folks longer…

I also love ‘playing with people’s minds.’  Not cruel mind ‘games,’ mind you – but saying things that challenge you.  For in challenging you, when you engage, it challenges me – and I have yet so much to learn.  So, bring your “A-Game” when you come to play with me!  Keep it light-hearted, and keep it fun.

I enjoy building things – working with my hands – “creating something from nothing.”  I always have.  Whether it be a ‘small business,’ or a piece of furniture or a canoe, I just like building things.  In my “before Life,” as an “Adult,” I would build things and see a “flaw” in them.  I couldn’t live with those flaws, so I would take what-ever out back and destroy it – because it wasn’t “perfect.”  I don’t do that today; today I embrace my flaws, for they have helped me learn.  And, in the final analysis, isn’t God the only Perfect One?

I ventured into “Adulthood” for a while (for maybe 35 years or so), and hated it!  I felt as if I had to be everything others “expected” of me.  The only way I coped was by drinking because I didn’t have the ‘Life Skills” to deal with Life on Life’s terms.  And I excelled at drinking!  (Joe once told me, “Bob, if you ever were to back to drinking, let me know.  You were a fricking riot when you were ‘lit.'”  Well, he’s gonna have to wait; I don’t ever want to go ‘back there.’)  Anyway, before I digressed – in the process of being an ‘Adult,’ I lost my way.  Yes, I loved “what I was” – the ‘go-to-Hell Fighter Pilot;’ while inside I hated “who I was.”  Today it’s just the opposite – although I don’t hate what I was; I just don’t think of it as that big of a deal anymore…

In ‘Adulthood” I had some success, and some ‘failures.’  In my ‘professional’ career (flying) all my landings equaled my takeoffs, and that’s good.  (Baseball players are considered “great” if they hold a lifetime .333 batting average.  Aviators on the other hand, are held to higher standards.  (LOL)  Anything less than a 1.000 landing average would not be good.)

In my personal life I gave myself some real challenges.  But, day-by-day I have met these challenges head on, and will continue to do so.  And I am delighted to report, I am making progress!

“Delight” – another word I like these days.  When folks drive by my house, it looks like any other house on the street.  It’s only when you stop in, and begin to have a look around that you “discover things.”  Things that will bring you “delight.”  And that is my objective in working around the place – to create an environment of “delight.”

Although I do not attend church, God is very prevalent in my Life.  He never gave up on me, when I gave up on myself – and I am so grateful…

This is but a ‘snapshot’ of me this morning, of “where I am today.”  Living a Life of gratitude, humility, and delight – sprinkled with playful mischief upon occasion…

“New Age” Driving Tips – “Yield Signs”

I thought I had the ‘rules of the road’ down pretty well as I coasted into my 60’s.  Then I began to notice that perhaps I didn’t understand everything quite as well as I thought I did.  So I began paying more attention to driving these days and have learned quite a bit from my observations, that I now want to pass on to my grand kids.  No intent to make anyone “wrong” here, just my observations.

Yogi Berra once said, “You can observe a lot by watching.”  So, about 4-5 years ago, I began watching…

For my first installment here, let me share with you what I’ve learned about Yield signs.

Yield-Signs-29587-baYep, these pesky, annoying Yield signs…

I used to always wonder, when I had the ‘right-of-way’ by the law, whether someone coming the other way was going to actually yield or not.  Now keep in mind, I began driving back in the ’60’s; you know, when folks actually followed the ‘rules of the road.’  Until I ‘broke the code,’ coming to a ‘yield’  these days always seems to be a ‘crap shoot.’  Then (by watching), I noticed that it is all a function of the age of the driver coming to the yield sign!  It’s just this simple.

If the oncoming driver is over 60, there is a 97% chance that he or she will yield.  Of course there’s always the driver coming at you who shouldn’t be driving anyway.   Ya can’t get around this one – but more than likely, he or she is over 60, they will yield.  (Unless you are in Florida.)

For folks between 30 and 60:  Chance of yielding – 47%.  These folks are more often than not, still working.  And they tend to wait until the very last minute to leave anyway.  In addition a lot of these people think the ‘world revolves around them,’ so why shouldn’t you yield?  And they have figured out, if they don’t look, you probably will – and you’ll let them in…

Drivers less than 30:  Watch out!  These people either don’t care about the damn Yield sign, or are too stupid to know what it means!  I yield for these folks, even though I have the “right of way.”  It’s just easier…

And that, my friends, is all there is to it!

“ISIL Is Not Islamic”…

“ISIL is not Islamic…”, from Obama in his ‘lecture’ to the nation on 10 Sept. 2014.

Boy, I sure missed this!  I suppose it’s the radical Lutheran element of ISIS that is driving those guys to slice off heads…

Insulting to Who?

A couple years ago a friend in Indiana shared with me that her company was building a new manufacturing plant.  One of the features of this new plant was to be a room set aside specifically for Muslim prayer.  Right in the heartland of America… well, okay.

She was understandably upset.  While, for the most part, these fine folks are welcomed to our nation, I find it ‘interesting’ that these fine folks continually come to our country with ‘demands’ of some kind or another – and we continually acquiesce, so as not to insult anyone.  I wonder if anyone has considered that these relatively new fine folks are insulting Americans with their demands?  But to raise this question would not be ‘politically correct,” so everyone cowers – so as not to insult allah, the prophet or Joe-Shit the Ragman.  Well, okay.

After I listened to her for a while, it dawned on me – are they building a specific room for Catholics?  For Baptists?  For Lutherans?  You get the idea.  Of course not.  So, I encouraged her to put a bit of sunshine in Management’s day by asking the question: why not?  I don’t think she ever did because like a good American employee (who wants to keep her job) she has to just “suck it up.”  And probably the right call for her.

But I still wonder, what if the Catholics want to get together at lunch for a quick friendly game of Bingo?  Or how about the Lutherans coming together for a card game?  And what about the Baptists?  What if a couple of them to slip into ‘their room’ to make love over lunch?  Oh, never mind, if they get caught, folks will think they are dancing… but you get the point.

It is interesting nonetheless; while I am seeing an attack on Christianity in our nation, at the same time folks are bending over backwards to accommodate muslims… and that’s insulting to me!

Well Then, What’s the Point?

I had an interesting conversation with a woman the other day – could have been last week, last month, or last year – memory…  Anyway, the subject of dating came up, specifically how ‘challenging’ it is over 60.  A lot of us have our own homes and families; a lot of us are ‘set in our ways;’ there’s ‘political’ issues and so forth.  And on occasion there is the distance factor.  During this particular conversation it I shared with her that I was ‘alcoholic’ which drew her comment, “Oh, I could never date an alcoholic!”  Interesting… so I prodded a little deeper.

It turns out that her father, her grandfather and I think she said her sister, are/were all alcoholics.  And not very good ones from what she said.  I am still trying to get my mind wrapped around that one: exactly what is a ‘good’ alcoholic?  Interesting… so I continued to prod.

She talked about the disappointments she’s had with her father, her grandfather and her sister, their broken promises, the pain and so forth.  I can relate to that.  Then she ‘trumped’ the conversation with, “You know, once a person is alcoholic, there are other associated addictions.”  Didn’t see that one coming.  Interesting…

‘Other addictions’ are commonly referred to as ‘cross-addictions,’ and are quite common.  I have experienced cross addiction myself.  When I was flying I had to be careful about dropping quarters into the poker machines in Vegas.  When I was winning, I could feel the euphoria; when I lost I could feel the disgust, the shame and so forth.  Same process.  But there is a difference with cross-addictions when one is in recovery.  And like the program itself, it’s simple.  It’s “Awareness.”  If I am aware of my propensity for ‘cross-addiction,’ I can deal with it, whatever it is (gambling, sex, shopping, etc.)  – if I choose.  And that’s the ‘key.’  Choice.  It’s always my choice.

I don’t know why, but I was out sanding Noah’s canoe this morning when this conversation wondered back through my mind.  I have great conversations with my mind upon occasion… Anyway, I wondered: if alcoholics are “flawed” by the very nature of being alcoholic (as she was implying), then what’s the point of recovery?  If we are ‘doomed;’ predestined to jump from one addiction to another, then, what’s the point?  Then I thought of a couple facets of recovery that escaped me as she talked:  Hope and Faith.

If I didn’t have either the Hope of recovery, or the Faith that I will continue to recover, then what’s the point?  In her eyes, wouldn’t I be a better citizen by sticking a 9mm in my mouth – and pulling the trigger?  Wouldn’t I be doing all of ‘society’ a favor?

Nah, don’t like that option too much…

So, now as I head back out to (hopefully) finish sanding, I’ll pray for her… That’s the point!

Prayer…
