Behind the Kid…

I recently changed my FaceBook profile picture to this:

AA_Holliker_060

It was taken at Davis-Monthan AFB, (Tuscon) AZ in 1957.  I was 10 or 11 years old at the time.  I changed my picture to “honor” my service to our Nation, as an Air Force Brat.  Anyway, this morning I want to tell you about what’s ‘behind the kid.’

If you look close, you can see airplanes.  They are sitting in the “Boneyard.”

http://www.thelivingmoon.com/45jack_files/03files/Davis_Monthan_Air_Base_Air_Force_Boneyard.html

Also of note is, there is no fence between me and the Boneyard.  So, where do you think I played?  As a matter of fact, I ‘soloed’ my first airplane in that boneyard!

It wasn’t sanctioned, by any means, but that’s where we all played.  They didn’t need a fence because in those days, we didn’t destroy things.  There also weren’t as many lawyers.  How many playgrounds have lawyers ruined over the years now?  (Ah ha, a topic for yet another ‘post’ someday!)

Just off my right shoulder sat another house, like the one you see behind me.  It was between those 2 houses that I leaned that you do not put a can of pork and beans in a campfire without first opening it!

We were having a ‘sleep out’ between the 2 houses one night, and decided to cook some beans.  So, when the fire was going nicely, I set a can of beans right in the middle of it.  Crap!  I don’t know what hurt most: the hot beans on my leg, or the piece of tin can embedded in my leg?

It is truly remarkable that I survived my youth…

“Real” Alcoholics…

When I hear someone at an AA meeting open with; “Hi, my name is Eric Schmuckenfuss, and I am a ‘real alcoholic’ – I see a “free shot!”  What the hell is a “real alcoholic?”  Is it something like being a ‘little bit pregnant?’  Anyway, it’s a ‘free shot’ for me!

Even if I don’t have anything to say, I will conjure up something – just so I can introduce myself like, “Hi, I am Bob, and I just have a mild case of alcoholism.”  It is always worth the effect… LOL!

Why I Drive the Speed Limit

You might think I would drive the ‘speed limit’ today because, “…it’s the Law.”  Doesn’t seem that’s my motivation anymore.  Today it seems I drive the speed limit only to piss “you” (rhetorically) off!  Or, you would think.  It appears there is always someone on my ass to get around me, as soon as they can.  Well, let me “share” something with you, Sunshine.  Just because you think you have to be somewhere “right now,” doesn’t mean I am going to speed up for you.  As a matter of fact, it kinda warms my heart to see you get pissed off, back there in my rear view mirror!

I have observed all sorts of “hissy fits” in my rear view mirror here of late.  A couple of my favorites are:

1.  The steering wheel bangers.  That’s so much fun to watch!

2.  The ‘head shakers.’  Like, I care?

3.  The folks who come up to my bumper, only to draw back when they can’t make the pass.  It just seems to add to their frustration.

If I think it will annoy you further, I will drag out my phone, and pretend to make a call – only to get to you even more spun up – while going 3 miles per hour under the posted speed limit!  And I can go 5 miles and hour under the limit, if I want…

Being retired, I have all the time in the world to “work you over.”  And yes, I am getting old – which makes it even more fun!

Traitors

We are currently dealing with two “traitors” in the United States now: Manning and Snowden.  They are claiming they are “whistle blowers.”  Make no mistake – they are both “traitors.”

I think we need to give Snowden a medal of some kind or another for bringing all this NSA spying out in the open, then shoot him – using the medal as a sighting device.  Manning?  No medal, just shoot him…

A Love Letter to Harry…

Three's In_edited-1

Harry has ‘been gone’ just at a month now, and I miss him… this is a letter I wrote to him on 8 April; about a month before he passed.  I had been over to his house, and we talked of many things – as we had often done.

“I can only imagine all of what you are gong through these days – but I do know of the ‘depression.’  All too well.  The feelings of hopelessness and the ‘isolation.’  Too proud to ‘reach out’ in my anguish; angry and fearful.  But I have learned – yes, more often than not, the ‘Hard Way’ – that it is easier to share my troubles and concerns with someone else.  I have ‘used you’ many time – and you have always been here for me!

I need to tell you this morning that ‘I Love you Harry.’  Just this simple.  You have been such a dear Friend and Mentor to me – I could never repay you – except to mentor others in your spirit.  And that, I will do.

Who knows when you will ‘depart the fix’ – leave this world.  But you will be in my heart forever.  When I check on my bees, you’ll be with me.  When I’m out in the shop, you’ll be with me.  When I choke – ah, sorry, check my chickens, you’ll be right there.

One of these days I am going to build a canoe for myself.  It will also have the Missing Man formation in it and I will name it the “BS Harry!”  (Bob’s Ship Harry) – and it will be a beaut!

I love you my Friend…

…and so, on Father’s Day today, I am missing my friend…

Two Empty Suits

Two ’empty suits’ hang in my bedroom – two empty suits from 40+ years ago.

2EmptySuits

These are the ‘old’ K2B cotton flight suits we used up until early 1971 or so.  They were comfortable and fit great – so we switched to nomex flight suits.  The nomex suits were ‘fire retardant,’ but ill-fitting and hot.  And more expensive I suppose, but I digress.  I want to tell you about these two empty suits this morning.

The suit on the left belonged to Lt. Col. Hadley Thompson; the one hanging on the right was one of mine.  When I received Col. Thompson’s flight suit, I managed to retrieve a few of my old patches and reconstitute my old K2B.

(To gain an appreciation for Col. Thompson, I will redirect you to https://www.lonelypilotbob.com/?p=1448, followed by a short visit to, https://www.lonelypilotbob.com/?p=2082 ).

I look at these two suits from time-to-time, and reflect upon what they mean to me; simpler times, for sure.   I think to times when morals and values meant more, for sure.  To a period when we did things; not because they did or did not conform to “the Law,” or a certain ‘Operating Instruction’ (we called them Regulations and manuals in those days) but because doing them, or not doing them, was ‘the right thing’ to do.

I could go on forever on this track – doing “the right things,” vs. “the legal things,” but that is not the intent of this post.  This morning I just want to reflect a bit, on what the men like Col. Thompson meant to me; what they instilled in me.  Things like integrity, honor, loyalty and so forth – things that were integral to me becoming not just a pilot, but a man…

(And for the ‘smart asses’ of my following, I know it took a little longer than anticipated, but I am “getting there!”)

I like seeing Colonel Thompson and I hanging there – just “hanging out” together.  Maybe one of these days, I’ll take us down; but not today…

Let ’em Die…

Ann Coulter this week, said, “If the GOP (Republican Party) is this stupid, it deserves to die.”

I’ve thought this for some time now…

Design For the “Brat Pin”

I have been working on an initiative to gain recognition for the sacrifices and service of Military Brats to our nation.  Through my US Representative, Mr. Bob Latta, we now have a bill before Congress (although “in committee”) to authorize a Congressional Commemorative Lapel Pin (Button).  It is H.R. 1889, House Resolution 1889.

The bill states that, “shall be designed, as approved by the Secretary of Defense, to identify and recognize an eligible child dependent of a member of the armed forces who serves on active duty for a period of more than 30 days.”  With all the bipartisan bickering in Congress these days, this is the only stumbling block I see.  The cost of the pins is a “pass-through” cost to the parents: “(c) Cost- Presentation of a children of military service members commemorative lapel button is conditioned upon the payment of an amount sufficient to cover the cost of manufacture and distribution of the lapel button.”

So, I have a solution.  Let’s use the already accepted flower of Military Brats as the design of the pin: Screen Shot 2013-06-12 at 7.24.11 AMSimple, huh?

Apathy, Ignorance and Determination!

This is a reply I received last night off a post I put on an internet “Brat” site about the initiative to recognize Military Brats with a Congressional Commemorative Lapel Pin:

“I’ve met with my congressman too, and Roberta has written to just about everyone she could..and no luck.  My congressman Tom Rooney R/FL said that they do recognize our plight, and need for recognition, but the problem with this bill getting passed right now is of course, the budget.  Unfortunately, recognizing brats by producing hundreds of thousands of pins is not a priority budget item.”

Grrrr!  And, my reply:

Mil Brats Legislation

“Hi, And, thank you for your support here!   If Rep. Rooney would actually read the bill, H.R. 1889, he would see that there is virtually NO COST to our precious government.  There will not be one EBT payment missed for the production of our pins!  The bill is structured to where the parents pay for the damn pins!

There is usually a die charge, then price-breaks for increasing amounts of pins.  I suppose I might see if I can get the Pope to bless a design before our stupid congress!  This is only a 6-page bill – ya think he might be able to read it before voting on an obamacare bill?    And I even have a design suggestion for the pin – saving the shoeclerks even more time and money.  See: https://www.lonelypilotbob.com/?p=2256    Morons like this make me ever more determined.  Our kids – “we” – deserve the recognition for our service!   Think I might be a little bit passionate about this idea?  LOL!  Again, thank you for your interest here… it encourages me!  Bob”

When people like this tell me I “can’t” do something or another, it is in my nature to become even more determined!  We will make this happen!

Aside:  “Thousands” of pins?  We are probably talking “millions” of pins!
